The Underdog Series: Shiseido Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector

The Underdog Series is an ongoing collection of products that, for whatever reason, receive less attention than they rightly deserve.

Shiseido probably doesn't receive the sort of press it should this side of the world (its the largest cosmetic firm in Japan, fourth largest in the world), which is a shame. In terms of foundations, Shiseido is a consistent performer, offering an impressive number of formulas that cater to different needs; further, many of the foundations contain SPF ratings of 15+ and come in a number of well-balanced, skin-like shades. Yes, please!

Though most similar to a tinted moisturizer, Shiseido's Urban Environment Tinted UV Protector differs in a number of ways. For starters, the coverage, though sheer, is closer to medium than sheer. The colour range is limited (3), which could pose challenges for many skin tones. Unlike other tinted moisturizers I've tried, Urban Environment more readily absorbs into the skin, leaving little oily residue (I'm looking at you, Laura Mercier) and providing a truly 'your skin but better' finish. That said, I do have one major complaint - the size. I purchased Urban Environment from my local Sephora for $30, which is on the lower end of mid to high-end tinted moisturizer prices. However, the industry size standard for tinted moisturizers is about 1.7 fl oz (50'ish ml) - you receive only 1 fl oz of Shiseido's Urban Environment. That's a bummer, especially considering that this product is specifically marketed as an environmental protector, i.e. an SPF.

Overall, I'd give this a B+/A- on the review scale. Great coverage, broad spectrum SPF, travel-friendly packaging, easy application, good longevity; poor colour selection, shorted size.

Have you tried any Shiseido products?
